University Health Services (UHS) is a complete outpatient health center for students, providing medical, counseling, insurance and health promotion services.
Students can use medical and mental health services just as they would at their regular doctor’s office and urgent care center, whether or not they are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan. Services are supported by registration fees and are provided at moderate pricing.

All registered students at the University of California are required to meet the university's health insurance mandate. Registered UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students are automatically enrolled in the Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) as a way to meet this mandate, and are charged a health insurance fee on their CARS registration bill.
Students can waive SHIP enrollment if they have comparable coverage. Please note: Waiver Applications must be completed during the waiver period.
Voluntary and Dependent SHIP plans will be available in 2025-2026 for dependents of students enrolled in SHIP, as well as for concurrent enrollment undergraduates and filing fee graduate students.
SHIP Vision Coverage
All UC Berkeley students enrolled in SHIP automatically receive benefits covering vision exams and prescription glasses or contact lenses.
VSP is the vision insurance provider for SHIP students and members may make appointments with UC Berkeley School of Optometry. For more information, visit UHS Vision Services.
SHIP Dental Coverage
Dental coverage is included as part of the Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan. All UC Berkeley students enrolled in SHIP automatically receive benefits covering preventive and general restorative dental care.
Metlife is the dental insurance provider for SHIP students. Note that dental care is not provided at the Tang Center. SHIP members can select from a wide choice of local dentists, listed on the MetLife website.
Insurance for Families
If you have dependents, you can purchase additional dependent insurance coverage for them. For more information, please contact the Student Health Insurance Office.
