Before You Arrive

To prepare you for your inevitable job search, below are several timelines and events to keep in mind prior to your arrival at Berkeley Haas. Depending on what industry you're interested in, please remember the key dates below to set you up for success in your first semester and beyond.

Job Search Timelines

The internship search process can be divided into two styles of company engagement and timeline format: CMG-Managed (Early Recruiting) and Just-In-Time (JIT).

CMG-Managed Interviewing

Consulting firms, investment banks, and large organizations partner with CMG to engage with internship-seeking students as soon as September of your first semester at Haas. Take some time to consider which events and companies you're interested in so you can determine how to approach your Fall semester.

Examples of on-campus recruiters are:

CONSULTING -  Bain | BCG | Deloitte | McKinsey
INVESTMENT BANKS -  Goldman Sachs | JP Morgan | Morgan Stanley
LARGE ORGANIZATIONS -  Amazon | Genentech | Microsoft | Visa

Timeline showing Presentations, Coffee Chats, Networking from September through December and interviewing January and February

BENEFITS CHALLENGES
  1. Linear path — hiring timelines, openings, and deadlines are clear.
  2. Recruiters come to you.
  3. Organizations have a relationship with Berkeley Haas.
  4. Offers are given between November and February.
  1. Competitive process across top business schools.
  2. Condensed cycle with 20+ hours/week devoted to the search, including 4-5+ networking conversations per week over four months.
  3. If you are also interested in roles that recruit just-in-time (JIT), you may have the challenge of deciding on early offers vs JIT opportunities later in the semester.
  4. May have to decline an offer from early recruiting to pursue JIT opportunities depending on timing.

Just-In-Time Opportunities

Other industries (technology, social impact roles, boutique consulting, start-ups, amongst others) recruit later in your second semester. Again, check which companies you're interested in, and take advantage of the networking events, treks, conferences, and other resources during the school year.

Types of JIT recruiters:

TECHNOLOGY
VENTURE CAPITAL
INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
RENEWABLE ENERGY/sustainability
PRIVATE EQUITY
RETAIL / SMALL CONSUMER PACKAGED GOODS
START-UPS
BOUTIQUE CONSULTING
SOCIAL IMPACT ROLES & NONPROFITS

How to think about your time once you arrive
Once you arrive, it is all about prioritization. In my first month, I didn't want to miss anything or say 'No' to anything. But I found myself running around from meeting to meeting without any time to reflect on my experiences. So I started prioritizing. First, I wrote down my goals for the next 2 years and started saying 'No' to things that are not exciting for me or not taking me closer to my goals. This helped me enjoy my first year a lot more and spend time on things that mattered to me.
