1. Intake Meetings and WELaunch (Orientation)
Starting with New Student Orientation, you will meet with CMG staff so we can learn about your individual career plans, provide you with resources, and give you tips on how to start your career search in the fall. We host these intake meetings with your cohort group to facilitate your network building immediately.
ISO, WeLaunch, and ACE Week, with our CMG Career Launch, are experiential workshops designed to kick-start your career learning journey. It’s intensive and collaborative, and you’ll come away with clear actions to take you through the first few weeks of your semester, plus the knowledge of who within CMG and your own peer group are best placed to support you.
2. Career Workshops
Starting in WeLaunch and ACE Orientation, CMG helps you create powerful marketing documents in the form of your resume and LinkedIn profile. You'll learn how to review a resume and cover letter from the point of view of a recruiter, interpret job postings, and align your unique set of skills with what the hiring manager is prioritizing.
Later in Fall A, you will have opportunities to participate in a series of Career Workshops, which include:
3. Industry Primers and Meetups
We will also provide Primers and Meetups so you can get a clearer understanding of different industries. During the semester, we start to explore the functional roles you might target that best align with your skills, interests, and values.
Industry primers are overviews where you learn about an industry and the roles MBAs typically pursue. They are a great way to explore options if you are unsure of your career goals.
Why attend an industry primer? Here are three reasons:
Once you’ve attended a Primer and decided to explore a specific industry topic further, you will want to attend CMG Meetups. These meetups quickly connect you with people who share similar interests. Hear from Peer Advisors and CMG Relationship Managers to learn about industry topics and network with graduating students.
Meetups start in September. We also support students attending early diversity recruiting conferences like Reaching Out MBA (ROMBA), Prospanica, Asian MBA, and National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA).
4. Join Career Clubs
Don't forget to join the relevant professional career clubs for the industries you are targeting post-MBA. This is a great chance to get exposure to other areas of interest, especially if you're switching careers.
5. VIA Strengths & Values Assessment
What are your strengths and values? Research reveals that people who recognize and use their top strengths daily are three times more likely to report having an excellent quality of life and six times more likely to be engaged at work.
In Fall B, CMG will introduce you to the Values In Action (VIA) assessment as you move on to one-to-one networking and behavioral interview preparation. This will add power and structure to your interview stories and networking pitches.
MBA 20
What I wish I knew
Coming to Haas, I wish I had known to connect with more Haasies entering their 2nd year to chat about extracurricular opportunities on campus. Once the semester starts, there are tons of info sessions to attend and clubs to get involved with, and it would have helped to come into the semester already knowing which ones I wanted to prioritize.
How to think about your time once you arrive
Time is going to fly and your calendar will fill quickly once you're on campus! There are so many opportunities outside of classes, so it's easy to feel you're missing out. Prioritizing just 3 primary activities for involvement in the first semester helped me stay on track. While some students will take on more, keep in mind what your priorities are and that there will be new opportunities arising constantly throughout first year. Find your feet, set your priorities, and get started jumping into opportunities that excite you most!
